Chaos to Calm
Expressive Art Journaling for Kids with BIG Feelings
Unleashing Creativity for Emotional Regulation
Artists will tell you that when they really get into their creative work they enter a “flow state.” A state of being fully present that activates the parasympathetic nervous system (the ‘Chill Pill’ system). Promoting self-regulation and relaxation. Ultimately, this system is in charge of calming the mind and body down after an event has triggered a stress response (often called an autonomic nervous system activation). Oftentimes for kids, it can be hard to identify their emotions even when regulated, let alone once a trauma response has been activated. Words require self-awareness, self-reflection, and most importantly, a regulated system to be able to do either.
This is where creativity can overcome those obstacles.
Journaling Just Got an Upgrade
Expressive art journaling does not require words or even active self-reflection. It is an intuitive “gut feeling” process that focuses on what “feels right” rather than trying to identify the exact emotion and why. It does not require a fully regulated system. It can be done as a solo practice, but it can also be an opportunity for co-regulation and familial bonding.
In this small group, children and their parent(s) will learn how to use everyday items to get creative and learn to “let go” of control. Parents will gain new ways to connect and communicate with their child, and the kids learn skills that can help them with self-regulation in a safe and fun environment.
